Creating the Griswolds Werewolf Creature Suit.
Sharp FX were fortunate in this job to be able to use one of their employees as the actor inside the werewolf suit.
As the job had such a short deadline, this made fittings and testing a lot faster than usual.
The model was dressed in a lycra suit and a two part plaster bandage cast was created of their upper torso, an alginate and plaster bandage head cast was taken, and hand casts. These casts were reproduced in fibreglass and used as the base for the sculpture.
The entire werewolf sculpture was created in three days with the teeth and jaw sculpted separately.
The sculpture was designed to create more of a wolf than man like appearance. The brief was 80’s style horror with references to Michael Jacksons thriller music video and the films like The Howling and American Werewolf in London.
The sculpture was walled up in sections with water based clay and a five piece fibreglass mould was created.
The fibreglass core was created by laying clay to create the thickness of the skin.
Internal finger extensions and nails were created using a 3D printer. The hands were sculpted over the top over a period of one day.
The hands were then moulded in a two part fibreglass mould.
The animatronic underskull was created from moulds of the core and fitted with a skull cap.
The cap was created from the actors head cast.
Animatronics were created by Sharp FX crew member Nicholas Calver.
Movements included jaw open close, nose wiggle, top lip curl and brow frown.
All animatronics were operated via remote control.
The teeth were sculpted interlocking with the use of the hinge jaw mechanism.
The teeth sculpture was then moulded in silicone and reproduced in acrylic.
To ensure all components of the suit fitted together nicely, a fitting was organised prior to the application of the fur.
This allowed us to check how the suit performer could move and make alterations if needed.
The final suit was made with foam latex and was furred using a combination of hair laying and punching.
